The community of the great and glorious Jews of Egypt, who have lived for hundreds of years on the banks of the Nile, reaches their final days. Until 70 years ago, this community was one of the most prosperous and powerful communities among the Jewish communities in the Arab world. "We are dying, we are drowning," says community leader Magda Haroun in a BBC interview. It's our end. "
Most members of the Jewish community, which peaked at the beginning of the 20th century and numbered 100,000 Jews, left during the long years of war with Israel. The government suspected every Jew as a spy and an agent with Israel. Today, this community has been almost exterminated. In recent years, the Israeli government has been making considerable efforts to track documents proving the size of the lost property of the large community. Today tens of thousands of descendants of the Egyptian community live in Israel.
Magda's priority is to take care of the elderly community members, who have lost their families, and preserve the assets of the eternal community. The report presents the main synagogue in Cairo, which was the center of the community, and turned today into a synagogue without worshipers or the public.
Only 12 Jews live in Cairo, most of them living alone in nursing homes. The BBC Lucy, a lonely elderly woman who is unable to look after herself and relies on the care institution's help, "I had friends here, I played football with neighbors. That's my house, why should I leave? "Lucy said.
