Protesters shattered the surveillance cameras installed on the outer walls, pelted the watchtowers with stones, and stormed the main gate of the embassy.
American forces fired some bullets into the air, then tear gas and smoke bombs to disperse the demonstrators, who ignored calls made through loudspeakers calling them to retreat.
And air strikes carried out by the American forces on Sunday night against the sites of the Hezbollah Brigades in western Iraq, which killed 25 people, angered among the Iraqis. The raids came in response to the killing of an American in an attack with 36 missiles that targeted a base in northern Iraq, which contains American soldiers.
The attack on the Americans is the latest in a series of rocket attacks against sites where US forces are in Iraq.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, while American sources have accused the Hezbollah Brigades, a faction of the Popular Mobilization, of being behind it.

Several of the most prominent leaders of the PMF participated in the protests, including the head of the PMF, Faleh al-Fayyad, his deputy Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, and the leader of the Asa’ib al-Haq faction, Qais Khazali.
Some demonstrators set up tents in the street opposite the embassy, ​​indicating that they would start an open sit-in.

وطالبت كتائب حزب الله العراقي والفصائل الموالية لإيران المنضوية في إطار الحشد الشعبي الذي يساند القوات العراقية، بعد الضربات الأميركية الأخيرة، بطرد "العدو الأميركي" من البلاد.
وحمل المحتجون قرب السفارة الأميركية اليوم لافتات كتب على إحداها "الى البرلمان: يجب إخراج القوات الأميركية وإلا سيتم طردهم"، فيما كتب على أخرى "أغلقوا السفارة الأميركية في بغداد"، و"الى أميركا.. سنردّ بقوة".
كما كتب المحتجون على جدار السفارة الخارجي عبارات بينها "قائدي سليماني"، في إشارة الى قائد "فيلق القدس" الإيراني قاسم سليماني المسؤول عن العمليات الخارجية ومهندس الاستراتيجية العسكرية الإيرانية في المنطقة، و"نعم نعم للحشد".
وقال مراسل لوكالة فرانس برس إن أعلاما لعدد من فصائل الحشد الشعبي علّقت على الجدار الخارجي للسفارة.
وشارك عدد من أبرز قادة الحشد الشعبي في الاحتجاجات، بينهم رئيس هيئة الحشد الشعبي فالح الفياض ونائبه أبو مهدي المهندس وزعيم فصيل عصائب أهل الحق قيس الخزعلي.
ونصب بعض المتظاهرين خيما في الشارع المقابل للسفارة، مشيرين الى انهم سيبدأون أعتصاماً مفتوحاً.
ودعا رئيس الوزراء العراقي المستقيل عادل عبد المهدي المتظاهرين إلى المغادرة "فورا"، مشددا على أن القوات الأمنية ستمنع "بصرامة أي تحرش بالممثليات الاجنبية".
وذكر مصدر دبلوماسي لوكالة فرانس برس أن السفير الأميركي ماثيو تويلر موجود خارج العراق، نافيا إجلاء موظفين في السفارة.
ويدعو العراق منذ أشهر حليفيه الكبيرين الأميركي والإيراني إلى عدم تحويل أراضيه إلى ساحة معركة بينهما.
لكن الضربات الأميركية الأخيرة أدت الى توتر العلاقات بين واشنطن وبغداد.
توتر العلاقات الدبلوماسية
وأعلنت الحكومة العراقية الاثنين أن الضربات التي حصلت على الحدود العراقية-السورية تدفعها الى "مراجعة العلاقة" مع الولايات المتحدة. وقال بيان رسمي "اعتمدت القوات الأميركية على استنتاجاتها الخاصة وأولوياتها السياسية، وليس الأولويات كما يراها العراق حكومة وشعباً".
ودعا نواب في البرلمان العراقي حكومة بلادهم إلى مراجعة الاتفاق مع الولايات المتحدة الذي يسمح بنشر جنود أميركيين في البلاد، وقالوا إن تلك الضربات ترقى إلى انتهاك للسيادة.

وقال مسؤولون في وزارة الدفاع الأميركية لوكالة فرانس برس إن الفصائل الموالية لإيران تشكل الآن "تهديدًا أكبر" من تنظيم الدولة الإسلامية بسبب الهجمات الصاروخية المتكررة على مصالح أميركية.
وأقر رئيس حكومة تصريف الأعمال عادل عبد المهدي بأن وزير الدفاع الأميركي مارك إسبر أبلغه بالضربات قبيل وقوعها.
وقال عبد المهدي "أخبرني أن الولايات المتحدة ستضرب كتائب حزب الله وأخبرته أن ذلك سيكون عملاً خطيرًا للغاية وقد يؤدي إلى تصعيد".
