Iran briefly stops the British ambassador and London condemns "a flagrant violation of international law"
On Saturday, Iranian authorities briefly arrested the British ambassador to Tehran, Rob Macer. British Foreign Secretary Dominic Rapp considered this arrest "without justification or explanation, a flagrant violation of international law." The Iranian authorities accused the British ambassador of "inciting" the demonstrators who went out in Tehran in response to an invitation to honor the victims of the Ukrainian plane. While Washington called on Tehran to apologize for the detention of the British ambassador.
British Foreign Secretary Dominic Rapp announced that the Iranian authorities had briefly arrested the British ambassador to Tehran, Rob MacAir, on Saturday.
"The arrest of our ambassador in Tehran without justification or explanation is a flagrant violation of international law," he said in a statement. The minister warned Iran that at a moment when it stands at a "crossroads", it must choose between "marching towards a pariah status" or "taking steps to calm tensions and embark on a diplomatic path forward."
Makir was arrested for allegedly "inciting" him, in Tehran, demonstrators angry at the downing of a Ukrainian passenger plane in an accident that killed 176 people, mostly Iranians, according to the Daily Mail. The newspaper added that the ambassador was released after an hour.
Hundreds of students gathered in Tehran on Saturday evening, in response to an invitation to honor the victims of the Ukrainian plane shot down.
According to Amnesty International, protests that broke out in mid-November in Iran have killed more than 300 people.
Trump praises the "bravery" of the Iranian demonstrators
US President Donald Trump warned the Iranian regime that there could "not be yet another massacre of peaceful protesters," referring to the protest movement that Iran witnessed last November.
"There can be no further massacre of peaceful protesters, no Internet cutoff. The world is watching," Trump wrote on Twitter.
Trump assured the Iranian people Saturday that he was "on his side" and that the United States was "closely following" the protests that erupted after Tehran acknowledged that it had shot down the Ukrainian plane.
"To the brave, long-suffering Iranian people: I have been with you since the beginning of my presidency, and my administration will be at your side," Trump wrote on Twitter. "We are following your demonstrations closely, and your courage inspires us," he added.
The United States calls on Iran to apologize
On Saturday, the United States called on Iran to apologize for detaining the British ambassador to Tehran.
US State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortigas wrote on Twitter that this arrest "violates the Vienna Convention, which the regime has a bad history of violating."
"We call on the regime to officially apologize to the United Kingdom for violating its rights (the ambassador), and to respect the rights of all diplomats," she added.
On Saturday, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson considered that Iran's admission of a downing of a Ukrainian passenger plane by mistake was "an important first step."
"We will do everything we can to support the families of the four British victims and ensure that they get the answers and fold the page the way they deserve," he said in a statement issued by his office.
Johnson added that his country will work closely with Canada, Ukraine and other international partners to ensure a "comprehensive, transparent and independent international investigation and return of the dead bodies".
He explained that "this dire incident confirms the importance of reducing the escalation of tension in the region." He stressed "the importance of all leaders moving forward on the diplomatic track."

أوقفت السلطات الإيرانية السبت لفترة وجيزة السفير البريطاني في طهران روب ماكير. واعتبر وزير الخارجية البريطاني دومينيك راب هذا الاعتقال "بدون مبرر أو تفسير، هو انتهاك صارخ للقانون الدولي". واتهمت السلطات الإيرانية السفير البريطاني بـ"تحريض" المتظاهرين الذين خرجوا في طهران استجابة لدعوة من أجل تكريم ضحايا الطائرة الأوكرانية. فيما دعت واشنطن طهران إلى الاعتذار عن احتجاز السفير البريطاني.
أعلن وزير خارجية بريطانيا دومينيك راب أن السلطات الإيرانية اعتقلت السبت لفترة وجيزة السفير البريطاني لدى طهران روب ماكير.
واعتبر راب في بيان إن "اعتقال سفيرنا في طهران بدون مبرر أو تفسير، هو انتهاك صارخ للقانون الدولي". وحذر الوزير إيران من أنها في لحظة تقف فيها عند "تقاطع طرق"، وعليها أن تختار بين "سيرها نحو وضع المنبوذ" أو "اتخاذ خطوات لتهدئة التوترات والانخراط في مسار دبلوماسي إلى الأمام".
واعتُقل ماكير بزعم "تحريضه"، في طهران، متظاهرين غاضبين من جراء إسقاط طائرة ركاب أوكرانية في حادث أسفر عن مقتل 176 شخصا معظمهم إيرانيون، وفقا لصحيفة ديلي ميل. وأضافت الصحيفة أنه جرى إطلاق سراح السفير بعد نحو ساعة.
وتجمع مئات الطلاب في طهران مساء السبت، استجابة لدعوة من أجل تكريم ضحايا إسقاط الطائرة الأوكرانية.
وأسفرت الاحتجاجات التي اندلعت في منتصف تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر في إيران عن مقتل أكثر من 300 شخص، وفق منظمة العفو الدوليّة.
ترامب يشيد بـ"شجاعة" المتظاهرين الإيرانيين
وحذر الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترامب النظام الإيراني من أنه لا يمكن أن "تكون هناك مجزرة أخرى بحق المتظاهرين السلميين"، في إشارة منه إلى الحركة الاحتجاجية التي كانت إيران شهدتها في تشرين الثاني- نوفمبر الماضي.
وكتب ترامب على تويتر "لا يمكن أن تكون هناك مجزرة أخرى بحق المتظاهرين السلميين، ولا قطع للإنترنت. العالم يُراقب".
وأكد ترامب للشعب الإيراني السبت أنه يقف "إلى جانبه" وأن الولايات المتحدة "تتابع عن كثب" الاحتجاجات التي اندلعت بعد إقرار طهران بأنها أسقطت الطائرة الأوكرانية.
وكتب ترامب على تويتر "إلى الشعب الإيراني الشجاع الذي يعاني منذ فترة طويلة: أنا إلى جانبكُم منذ بداية رئاستي، وستظل إدارتي إلى جانبكم". وأضاف "نحن نتابع تظاهراتكم عن كثب، وشجاعتكم تُلهمنا".
الولايات المتحدة تدعو إيران إلى الاعتذار
ودعت الولايات المتحدة السبت إيران إلى الاعتذار عن احتجاز السفير البريطاني لدى طهران.
وكتبت المتحدثة باسم وزارة الخارجية الأمريكية مورغن اورتيغاس على تويتر أن هذا الاعتقال "ينتهك اتفاقية فيينا التي يمتلك النظام تاريخا سيئا في خرقها".
وأضافت "ندعو النظام الى الاعتذار رسميًا للمملكة المتحدة لانتهاك حقوقه (السفير)، وإلى احترام حقوق جميع الدبلوماسيين".
وكان رئيس الوزراء البريطاني بوريس جونسون اعتبر السبت أن إقرار إيران بإسقاط طائرة الركاب الأوكرانية من طريق الخطأ هو "خطوة أولى مهمة".
وقال في بيان صدر عن مكتبه "سنبذل كل ما بوسعنا لدعم عائلات أربع ضحايا بريطانيين وضمان حصولهم على الأجوبة وطي الصفحة بالشكل الذي يستحقونه".
وأضاف جونسون أن بلاده ستعمل من قرب مع كندا وأوكرانيا وغيرهما من الشركاء الدوليين لضمان إجراء "تحقيق دولي شامل وشفاف ومستقل وإعادة جثث القتلى".
وأوضح أن "هذه الحادثة الأليمة تؤكد أهمية خفض تصعيد التوتر بالمنطقة". وشدد على "أهمية مضي جميع القادة قدما بالمسار الدبلوماسي".
