Foreign Ministry spokesperson Emmanuel Nachson told JewishPress.com there have been no reports of Israelis present at the airport at the time of the explosions. However, he said, it is too early to be certain of anything. The spokesperson also declined to comment on who might have been behind the attack. “We expect to issue a statement shortly, as soon as we know more information,” he said.
Two explosions were heard at the airport, coming just four days after Salah Abdeslam, the mastermind of the Nov. 13 ISIS attack on Paris, was captured in Brussels.
A United Hatzolah volunteer was at the Brussels airport at the time of the explosions. He described the scene: “At the time of the explosion I was praying at the synagogue in the airport. We felt the explosion. We exited the synagogue in order to see what was happening and we joined the stream of people who were being ushered by police to exit the terminal.
“For the moment we are being kept at the other end of the airport and we are awaiting further instructions from security forces.”
People at the scene said they heard gunshots and screaming in Arabic before the attack, according to media reports.
All airports in the country were been shut down pending further developments.
An explosion was heard at the Brussels metro station about a half hour after the initial attack at Zaventem Airport, but the cause of the blast is not yet clear.
