New York City coronavirus cases climb to 25, de Blasio says; statewide count at roughly 165

New York City now has 25 confirmed cases of coronavirus, Mayor de Blasio said Tuesday, up from 21.
He did not provide details of the new cases while speaking on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
The statewide count increased about 25 overnight, Gov. Cuomo said Tuesday on CNN, putting the toll at around 165.
Cases announced Monday include Rick Cotton, the executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
De Blasio sought to take a reassuring tone Tuesday morning.
“If you’re under 50 and you’re healthy, which is most New Yorkers, there’s very little threat here,” he said. “Transmission is not that easy. I think there’s been a misperception that coronavirus hangs in the air, waiting to catch you. No, it takes direct person-to-person contact.”
Officials have urged people experiencing symptoms including coughing, shortness of breath, fever and sore throat to stay home and call a doctor. Here are additional guidelines from the city’s Health Department.
“We’re keeping the situation relatively contained,” de Blasio said. “We’re better off not closing large events.”
De Blasio said Monday the city was still planning to hold the St. Patrick’s Day parade next week. But Cuomo on Tuesday said cancelling the huge gathering is “one of the things we’re looking at.”
