Joe Biden wins landslide in South Carolina primary powered by black voters as Super Tuesday looms

Joe Biden’s “firewall” held firm in South Carolina on Saturday as the former vice president won a sweeping landslide victory powered by overwhelming support from black voters.
A resurgent Biden was proclaimed the winner by networks seconds after polls closed in the Palmetto State. With 100% of precincts reporting, the former vice president crushed the field with 48% of the vote, compared to 20% for Sanders.
“Thanks to you, the heart of the Democratic party, we won and we won big!” Biden told an ecstatic crowd in Columbia, the state capital. “Join us, Democrats!”
The ex-vice president’s campaign hopes the huge win will give Biden a race-changing surge of popularity as 14 states prepare to vote this week on Super Tuesday. About a third of all the delegates are on the line.
In his victory speech, Biden boasted of his closeness to President Obama and roared that he is the best bet to send Trump packing.

“Win big or lose, that’s the choice,” Biden told supporters. “We need real changes right now.”
Biden ran away with a remarkable 60% support from black voters in South Carolina, swamping Sanders with just 17%, according to exit polls. They were locked in a much closer race among white voters.
Biden was on track to grab the lion’s share of South Carolina’s 54 convention delegates and will be close to neck-and-neck with Sanders in the delegate race after the traditional first four early state contests.

Sanders congratulated Biden and vowed to bounce back on Super Tuesday.
“There are a lot of states out there and you cannot win them all,” Sanders told a cheering crowd at a rally in Virginia Beach, Va. Virginia is a Super Tuesday state.
Biden and his establishment allies hope to blunt the rise of Sanders, who has taken control of the race with three straight wins out of the box and powerful support from Latino and younger voters.

Biden won a big endorsement from former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who made his vote of support on live television as the votes started to roll in.
“Joe Biden is the new comeback kid,” said Andrew Yang, the entrepreneur who pulled out of the Democratic presidential race last month.
Fueling Biden’s hopes for a big comeback is the fact that South Carolina has traditionally played a pivotal role in the Democratic nominating contest. It serves as an early marker for the preference for the party’s strongest voting block.
In recent contests, the winner of South Carolina has quickly consolidated support among African-American Democrats in similar southern states that vote on Super Tuesday, as well as blacks in cities nationwide that vote later.
Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, hopes to turn that conventional wisdom on its head with an energetic progressive movement that has mobilized young people and Latino voters.
Sanders knew he wouldn’t win in South Carolina. But he hoped to limit the damage and show he can win his fair share of black voters, a claim that was in serious doubt after Biden’s landslide. Sanders was on track to win barely more black voters in South Carolina than he did four years ago against Hillary Clinton.
