Michael Bloomberg abruptly ended his free-spending presidential campaign Wednesday and endorsed Joe Biden after an epic collapse on Super Tuesday.
The billionaire former New York mayor ― who spent about 300 bucks for every vote and had his only victory in the tiny territory of American Samoa, a place few even knew was voting — said he would drop out because Biden has proven he is the best one to take on President Trump.
"Defeating Donald Trump starts with uniting behind the candidate with the best shot to do it. After yesterday’s vote, it is clear that candidate is ... Joe Biden,” Bloomberg added in a statement.
Bloomberg spent about $600 million of his own money on his short-lived campaign and won about 1.7 million votes, although more will trickle in. He said Biden’s sweeping win on Super Tuesday effectively means he should be the Democratic standard-bearer.
“Joe has fought for working people his whole life," Bloomberg said. “I am glad to endorse him — and I will work to make him the next president of the United States.”
Bloomberg has repeatedly boasted he would spend $1 billion or more to beat Trump. Under campaign financing rules, Bloomberg would have to create a super PAC that would act independently of Biden’s campaign.
Elizabeth Warren, who also registered a woeful performance on Super Tuesday, was also huddling with top advisers about whether she should stay in the race. She earlier insisted she will stay in the race all the way to the Democratic National Convention.
Trump needled Bloomberg by suggesting he should fire his high-priced campaign staff, whom he derided as “fools and truly dumb people.”
“This has been the worst, and most embarrassing, experience of his life," Trump wrote on Twitter about Bloomberg.
He also seemed to acknowledge that Biden is now the clear Democratic front-runner: “Now on to Sleepy Joe!”

The stunning move by Bloomberg caps a remarkable four days that have totally transformed the Democratic presidential race.
Biden scored a shocking landslide powered by black voters in the South Carolina primary on Saturday. He then won the rapid-fire endorsements of fellow candidates Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar after they dropped out of the race.
That set him up to win a huge swing of African-American and suburban voters on Super Tuesday, swamping the rest of the field and beating progressive champion Bernie Sanders in a diverse set of states from Texas to Massachusetts.
Bloomberg’s backing may give Biden a powerful new boost as the primaries keep coming fast and furious, including upcoming battles in Sanders strongholds of Washington state and Michigan next Tuesday.
It also basically sets up a one-on-one battle between Biden and Bernie Sanders for the nomination. The race had looked like a jumbled fight involving Bloomberg and other candidates who might siphon votes away from Biden.
Moderates like Bloomberg fear Sanders’ leftist views could drive away suburban voters and swing states, delivering four more years to Trump. The devoted army of Sanders supporters believes the rumpled lefty can build a potent new coalition of revved-up younger voters and progressives to send Trump packing.
Bloomberg’s move could also energize Sanders backers who see the rapid consolidation of mainstream Democrats behind Biden as evidence that the aging party establishment will do anything it can to torpedo his insurgent campaign.
 The media mogul entered the race with much fanfare in the fall as Biden languished in the polling doldrums and struggled to raise money and build enthusiasm.
Bloomberg himself said that he feared no one else in the race had the mojo to beat Trump — including Biden. He also suggested he was concerned that Sanders could beat a wounded Biden and romp to the nomination.
Even though he had to skip the traditional four early voting states, Bloomberg quickly became a ubiquitous figure on television nationwide. He also spent lavishly on staff and campaigning on the ground in southern states as well as the biggest prizes of California and Texas, where others simply did not have the cash to compete.
But Bloomberg, who won three campaigns for mayor as a Republican, remained an unpopular and divisive figure for many Democrats. His apology for the racially charged stop-and-frisk policy sounded insincere, and he couldn’t explain away his support for Republican senators and even President George W. His first debate was nothing short of a total political disaster.
Bloomberg, 79, was eviscerated by Warren, who picked apart the mogul for his alleged history of sexist remarks and other shortcomings.
He was left sputtering and speechless, looking more like a wooden, aging plutocrat than a dynamic candidate to oust Trump from the White House. A week later, he underperformed again in a South Carolina debate as Biden built up a powerful head of steam.
On Super Tuesday, Bloomberg fell woefully short in the tally that matters.
The Republican-turned-Democrat struggled to even clear the 15% threshold to win delegates in most of the 14 states that went to the polls on Super Tuesday.
He was predicted to win about 50 delegates after apparently barely clearing the hurdle in a handful of states including Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee and perhaps California, where votes were still being tallied.
His sole victory came in the little-known territory of American Samoa, which divided up a paltry six delegates.
Democratic pundits went from wondering whether Bloomberg could run away with the nomination to poking fun at the ex-mayor’s puny return on his out-sized investment.

“He went from being mayor of a small island to winning a small island,” said Bakari Sellers, a former South Carolina state legislator.
