U.S. offers support to Mexicans after earthquake

President Trump and members of the administration offered support and condolences to Mexico in response to the September 19 earthquake that killed hundreds and toppled buildings in and around Mexico City.

Trump spoke at length with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto on September 20.

“God bless the people of Mexico City,” President Trump sent via tweet. “We are with you and will be there for you.”

Volunteers worked through the night to clear rubble and listen for people trapped by the 7.1 magnitude quake. At least 44 buildings collapsed or partly collapsed in Mexico City, according to Mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera.

“We stand ready to provide assistance should our neighbors request our help,” Heather Nauert, spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, said in a statement. “We offer our condolences to any who were injured or lost loved ones.”

First lady Melania Trump offered her support via Twitter for people affected by the earthquake.

Mexico was still in the midst of recovering from another powerful earthquake that had struck southern Mexico on September 7.

Tuesday’s earthquake in central Mexico hit on the anniversary of a devastating 8.0 magnitude earthquake that struck on the same day 32 years ago in Mexico City.

U.S. Ambassador Roberta Jacobson sent words of solidarity from the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City.
