Bernard Lewis was a true scholar & great man. I owe a great deal of my understanding of the Middle East to his work. He was a man who believed, as I do, that Americans must be more confident in the greatness of our country, not less. Thank you, Mr. Lewis for your life of service

Lewis, who was born in London, taught for many years at Princeton University in New Jersey and was close to American neoconservatives.
To the extent that Lewis has had an impact on generations of specialists in Islamic affairs, he has also been at the center of heated debates over his controversial positions.
One of these positions was his refusal to describe the massacres committed by the Ottomans against the Armenians in 1915 by genocide, and considered genocide as the "Armenian version" of history.
In an interview with the 2012 edition of the Chronicle of Haider Education, he said, "Some consider me a great genius, others a demon."
Among his most notable books are The Arabs in History, Islam in Crisis, Islam and Secularism, and The Political Discourse of Islam.
